This story is both sad and inspirational all wrapped in one. To think that a human being could be sold for property is hard to believe. What kind of heartless person could own another person? Even though it was an accepted/endorsed policy by the government, it is still just as despicable.

It is amazing that any race of people could survive, and in many instances prosper in the aftermath of this horrible episode in American history. If only Michelle Obama’s ancestor could see her now. No one would have predicted that the ancestor of a slave in the United States would one day represent this country as the “First Lady”.
